Obsity Statistics are Caused Mostly by Carbohydrate Addicts!
In my early 40's I knew nothing about carbohydrate addicts. Nobody did. Like most people, I had always followed my grandparents healthy lifestyle and I'd never had a weight problem I couldn't solve in the gym.
Then, due to a newly diagnosed thyroid condition, I began to gain weight. To me that meant more exercise and it seemed to work, but slower than I was used to. My doctor referred me to a Dietitian who was to guide and monitor my progress.
This was the early 80's, when most of us still followed the healthy lifestyle news encouraged by our grandma's. To diet was the new modern thing to do. Till then we had always stuck to a mostly protein diet. The modern diet was dominated by carbohydrates. Why did so many people abandon the
old traditional diet? They were forced to respond to an extensive scare campaign about
cholesterol. It seemed most people suffered from high
cholestrol and they were told the solution was the new modern diet.
What we did not know at the time was that the new modern carbohydrate diet, was a straight forward reversal of the old traditional protein diet. Despite propaganda to the contrary, the new diet had never been scientifically tested. there had been no trials or experiments to confirm that the diet actually worked. That it would reduce cholesterol, or that it was even safe for human consumption.
I was one of the millions of unlucky people encouraged to change my diet. For 20 years I tried every new diet that came along and my weight went up and down like a yo yo. The end result was a
slow, gradual increase in my overall weight.
Then finally I remembered what my life had been like till I reached my early 40’s. That’s when I so suddenly gave up the old
traditional diet my mother and grandmother had taught me. Sure, When i was silly with cakes and
sweets, I could put on a couple of pounds but never more than I could quickly work
off in the gym.
I suddenly realized something quite awesome. We - human beings do not have a body that is designed for diets. In fact, diets as we know them, were not invented till the second half of the 20th century. Our body has evolve over eons, not decades. It has not been able to adapt to the radical food changes we have forced on it.
With the benefit of hindsight, it’s clear that we began to diet not long before obesity statistics were first recorded.
It’s equally important to mention that this happened to be around the time the new diet began to replace our old traditional diet. What we finished up with were the exact opposite foods to those our body had been accustomed to for generations.
It has now been more than six years since
I went back to my old healthy lifestyle and stopped dieting. My weight has remained normal and I no longer suffer from food cravings or periodic binges. Most important of all, Im no longer addicted to carbohydrate.
It has made me realize that the healthy lifestyle news we are learning about today, is unscientific and untested. We don't need another
diet. We need to recognize that we are probably carbohydrate addicts
and our first priority should be to cure that addiction. Right now we are in the middle of an
obesity epidemic. The last thing we should be seeking is a diet.
To reverse today's obesity statistics, we need to cure our addiction and get back to what used to be our normal food. That was the food our body was designed to process. It is time to get back to the healthy lifestyle news designed by Mother Nature.
